Nephrology department –good to know:
About 1 million people in Germany suffer from a chronic kidney disease. At the moment approx. 80,000 patients are being treated with dialysis and almost 60,000 kidneys have already been transplanted.
The most common chronic kidney diseases that lead to a loss of the organ’s function include diseases such as
- glomerulonephritis,
- congenital kidney diseases (e.g. cystic kidneys),
- diabetic kidney diseases,
- hypertensive kidney diseases.
At Preventicum all diseases are treated with interdisciplinary care led conscientiously by Prof. Philipp, the former director of the Clinic for Nephrology of the University Clinic of Essen.
Therapy focuses on the following illnesses during treatment:
Hypertensive disorders
Hypertensive disorders are the most common risks for arteriosclerosis, stroke and heart attacks as well as kidney damages. Almost 15 million people in Germany have hypertension that requires further treatment. Patients with hypertension are examined using the latest methods and are appropriately treated with medication or alternative methods.
Transplants
In addition to providing care for patients with kidney disease we offer preparation as well as follow-up care in respect to a kidney transplant.
Over 3,700 kidney transplants were already performed in Essen.
Connective tissue diseases
Many connective tissue diseases such as rheumatism are harmful to organs, especially to the kidneys. 50 % of all patients with Wegener’s granulomatosis and 20 % of those with lupus erythematosus also have kidney disease.
New forms of therapy help to prevent renal failure in these patients.
Modern advancements in medical technology allow for the highest safety in diagnostics
24-hour blood pressure profile
Modern devices register the blood pressure for 24 hours, i.e. independently from a visit to the doctor and under everyday conditions. These measurements are much more valuable for the evaluation of the blood pressure than the single purely coincidentally measured blood pressure at the practice.
Sleep apnoea screening
One of the more frequent causes of poorly treatable hypertension is proneness to snoring and, in particular, sleep apnoea, which can both be treated very well.
Laboratory and endocrinologic diagnostics
Modern urine tests serve not only to evaluate kidney functions, but also the status of the vascular system (e.g. by detecting microalbuminuria). Many special forms of hypertension have already been detected by exact hormone analysis and were then eliminated once and for all.
