MRI of the intestine (virtual colonoscopy)
About 71,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in Germany each year and for 29,000 of those patients the diagnosis usually comes too late. The sad part is that colon cancer is almost completely curably when detected in an early stage. The virtual colonoscopy is used for early detection of colon tumours and their precursors, polyps. It can often even replace the traditional colonoscopy. Inflammatory changes of the intestinal walls can also be detected in the MRI.
